Ain't it the truth, that truth is funnier than fiction."Fiction", a noun, in literature it is in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people. Fiction is considered something that is invented or untrue. Comedy of truth is laughing with us, comedy of fiction is laughing at us. This is not an absolute, but a pretty good distinction on the cleverness or the meanness of humor. It is not an easy path, to keep humor free of grayness when we have our own blindspots about our societal beliefs or stereotypes.
I watched Lewis Black last night, many years since I last saw his act. Almost every other joke had the F word, and almost every other F word got a laugh from the audiences, from a half dozen cities on his tour. WTF? Oh well, know your audience. Find your formula, and make the masses laugh. Irony, parody, comedy. These are the principles of family friendly, and the art of laughing with us.
