Often times, we don't recognize our own inspiration's until we can look backwards at the events or action's. The proof is in the pudding is an apt adage. On the flip side of this truth comes "This too shall pass". For the sculptor, the inspired actions include finding a good stone, transporting it, carving it down, and then the recognized artistry. And all this followed an initial personal vision of a figure, some sketches, maybe some funding for the work. Other's will only refer to the art as inspired after it is unveiled, many, if not most, waiting until they hear from the critics and friends as to whether it is good art, or bad art.
I've never carved a stone statue, although I tried a little whitlen', with my pocket knife when I was young. My art is in music and farming, gardening and cooking. So, music it is. Today's pod casts features songs that were huge number one hit's, with many thinking they were immortal number one's. In my generation, Hey Jude and then Stairway to Heaven, each annual number one's, of all time for years. I'm sure Blue Eye's (Sinatra) had such hits, but I start with Bill Haley and the Comets from the 50's Hey Jude, Stairway, Comfortably Numb and Sweet Child of mine, all perennial number ones in survey's. In case you are wondering, the 1999 survey found Judy Garland's Somewhere Over the Rainbow and the all time number one song of the 20th century.
Led Zeppelin, chose their name, when a friend commented that their music would go over like a led zeppelin. They couldn't have know that Stairway to Heave would be US number one for over 10 years running. today Comfortably Numb and Sweet Child of mine rank one and two. Staying power for Pink Floyd and Gun's and Rose's.
This too shall pass. An adage of important acceptance. It foster's hope, patience and resolve. Carting a huge stone, by oxen, on a sweltering day in Italy, was probably a this too shall past time for Michelangelo. Without thought and awareness, labor, practice and rehearsal's the artist cannot fly. Such is the way of most inspired works of the past.
