Thursday: Living the Good Life

Today, the garden. Spring has sprung, according to the Roman calendar. Across the US, the actual onset of spring has been both too early in some regions, while lagging behind in others. The local environment started early, with a major return to winter, and now a stutter step onset of normal spring flowers and foliage. We continue to set records, almost every year, for highest annual highest average temperatures. Thus the historical times of planting, and choices of vegetables has been altered. More hot sun, suggests more full sunlight varieties of plants and vegetables.

My life just took a 360 turn, and I will be leaving my sister's home and garden, and return to my previous residence, where I spent 3 years building soil, developing compost systems, and building both 10 raised beds, but establishing a bigger full sun, large potted plant section, and an additional 4-6 beds, from previously unused areas of their back yard. For the past week, I have been spreading about 8 cubic yards of soil and mulch, as well as planting the early crops and seeds.

Soon, there will be 4-6 additional fruit trees, in the far corner of the yard. Depending on my speed of moving a pile of 18" tree trunks, it is either the tail end of tree planting season, or it will have to wait for a better time. Fall is ok, but early spring is best, and nursery's will maintain dependably vital trees through the winter, while severe conditions may stunt the late plantings. My bet is that the planting will occur next February or March, but I'm the gardener, not the owner. Its too early for tomato's, pepper's, eggplants and most squash, but soon. Check a major nursery for inventory, they will make a major inventory shift, when the time is right, as selling plants before they can survive is not a good practice, and family owned nursery's will know better. Or you can ask a knowledgable employee about time of season. Good gardening to all of you, G'day mates.
